Living in Nanshan: The Expat and Tech Hub
Nanshan is where Shenzhen's ambition meets its coastline: Tencent and Huawei on one side, the Shekou expat bubble on the other, and the best urban waterfront in China between them.

The short version
Nanshan has two personalities. The east, around Hi-Tech Park (科技园) and Shenzhen University, is pure tech: glass campuses, young programmers, and bubble tea past midnight. The west is Shekou (蛇口), the oldest and most established expat community in Shenzhen, where restaurants serve actual Western food and rents make you wince. Between them runs Shenzhen Bay Park, kilometres of waterfront cycle paths with Hong Kong across the water.

Why people choose it
The quality of life is the best in central Shenzhen if the budget stretches: sea breeze, actual parks, actual beaches (generously defined), and the international schools that anchor most expat family decisions; see international schools for the full directory, several of which cluster around Shekou. Highlights worth knowing before you commit: Shenzhen Bay Park for running and cycling, Shekou Sea World as the expat social hub, and OCT Loft’s converted-factory galleries and cafes when you need a Brooklyn substitute.
The trade-offs
You pay for it. Shekou rents are the highest in the city, and the tech corridor can be a long walk from the nearest metro station. If you work in Futian, the commute is fine; if you work in Longgang, think carefully.

- Find an apartment, and read the scam section before viewing anything
- Register your address within 24 hours
- Phone number and bank account, ideally at a One-Stop Centre
- Families: international schools and family visas
- Making friends: Shekou makes this easier than anywhere else in the city
